Winner of the Coretta Scott King - John Steptoe for New Talent Author Award Filled with mystery and an intriguingly rich magic system, Tracy Deonn’s YA contemporary fantasy reinvents the King Arthur legend and “braids together Southern folk traditions and Black Girl Magic into a searing modern tale of grief, power, and self-discovery” (Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles ). After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. A flying demon feeding on human energies. A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down. And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw. The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates. She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight. This paperback edition of Legendborn contains a teaser to the thrilling sequel, Bloodmarked , as well as an exclusive short story from Selwyn Kane's perspective! Read more

REVIEW

Wow, just, honestly after finishing this book I was speechless because of how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. Medium-paced a 16-year-old Bree finds herself at UNC- Chapel Hill in an early college program just months after her mother passed away suddenly. What ensues is a maze of twists and turns, secrets and lies that will keep you guessing until the end. While I had an inkling of the final major plot twist at the end, it did not ruin the rest of the book for me. Bree is everything you want from a reluctant hero sort of character. She is smart and strong willed. She knows what she wants and she goes after it. She grows as she finds out more details of her families past and throughout the book she is struggling with grief and sadness and pain and anger which just feels so incredibly real. The book is set in contemporary times and is based of Arthurian legend. Tracy Deonn puts a really interesting twist on the time-honored tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. This book also deals with some really heavy topics that much of the plot is based around. I would not call this book dark, I would call it dipped in the realism that is this countries history and facing the sad honest truth with steel in its eyes. I really want to comment on one other thing but it doesn’t feel right coming from me (a white woman) so I will just say this. This book is important. Its heroine is a triumph and I for one am so glad I had the chance to read about her. Cover Stunning, anyone interested in YA would be drawn to the beautiful illustrations of a girl doing magic on the cover. It helps even more that the girl looks beautiful and stong. This cover absolutely draws the eye and made me want to look deeper into what the story is under the cover. Recommendation I will recommend this book to everyone and anyone who will listen to me. If you are interested in YA contemporary fantasy based on myths and legends then this is the first book I would recommend to you. If you will read anything with a little magic in it, I would recommend this book to you. Honestly like I said I would recommend this book to almost anyone. Just read it. Tracy Deonn wrote a character who feels so real and nuanced and I sincerely cannot wait to read not only the next book in this series but whatever she comes out with next.
