REVIEW
I teach 7th grade ELA and one of our assignments when we read “The Giver” is to choose a book to do an independent assignment on. The hunger games we use excerpts in class plus it is one of the books they may choose for the independent reading. I read this so that I would know the book when they do their assignments. I was. It disappointed at wasting time reading all of these books, as I had to read all three and am about to read the prequel. I am nowhere near a young adult, in fact I have kids are are adults, youngish adults but still. This book still interested me and even after seeing the movies, I still loved seeing what couldn’t be in the movies. What Katniss and the others were thinking was a big plus as it explains a lot of things not in the movie. The movie actually is really close to the book but you cannot get the amount of unrest, what type of unrest, what really leads to the rebellions and the developments of these friendships that almost were enemies instead. There is a wealth of information in these books if you like the movies or never heard of them. There is a lot of symbolism in the books, there is symbolism that is in the first book and the last part of the last book. There is so. I h more when you can understand these characters. The characters and this world, though not real, are so well developed, it feels like you have been to these districts and the capitol, you understand snow a lot better and you truly get a good idea of who katniss, Petaluma, gale, prim, and the other contestants are. I really recommend reading this even if you’ve seen the movies or even if you haven’t. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like post apocalyptic books because this could be us. We are a war away from this possibly, a few decisions in the government away, you never know. It doesn’t seem realistic until you really think about the motives behind the decisions made by the people in the past, it shows that in the last book. It also shows the lengths supposedly good people who have been treated poorly their whole lives, can act and the atrocities they are willing to commit when they have a chance to fight back. It also shows what the good or bad side might feel is acceptable as they feel they are doing the right thing. The last thing I want to say. Got out of this book, is that if the world does start fighting itself, which we get close to often, this could become a version of reality. It isn’t that far fetched if we try to wipe out each other. The author did a wonderful job in developing all of thieve characters and making their lives, feelings and actions feel real. They change through the book as a result of their experiences and that was so real too, I was a therapist/social worker before I was a teacher. The world building was exquisite. It could be real and what happens next week or it could be complete fiction that I pray never occurs, but it could. The book is great though.
